LOCAL ART CLASSES

Not only does the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts showcase amazing exhibits, they also offer art classes. Classes begin at age three and go all the way through high school. Younger kids will enjoy learning art basics in their introductory, My First Art Class program. Looking for a unique gift to give a loved one? At Art Bayou, your children can paint pottery. Pottery trinkets such as animals and princesses are available for purchase. The cost is $6 (plus cost of pottery) for children under 12 and $8 for anyone over 12.

Design Street in Plainwell offers many different opportunities for students who love art and want to grow their talents. Programs include a Creative Kids Afterschool Program for kids age five to nine and a Workshop Wednesday class for children age 10 to 14. If your kids want to learn even more, some adult classes offered at Design Street allow children as young as 10 or 12 to join. Fall Registration ends September 22. Family Center for the Arts offers something for every age group. Your kids will have the chance to learn with their peers during classes such as Creative Expressions, Art-Tastic, Basics of Drawing, Teen Art and Art Adventures. The SMArt Art Education program is a seven-week program for students ages seven to 14. A fall and spring semester is offered, meeting on Saturday mornings at Western Michigan University. The YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo offers art classes at both their Portage and Maple Branch locations. The Portage Branch offers an Early Start class with a focus on storytelling. At the Maple Branch, your kids can take an Adventures in Art class where they will learn about different cultures, while using various art techniques. Non-Member rates are available. Home Depot in Portage offers a weekly Kids Workshop on Saturday mornings from 9:00 am to noon. All workshops are FREE for children age five to 12. In addition to their craft, kids receive an apron, pin and certificate. Spots are available on a first come basis and can be reserved by signing up here.

Are your children following in your crafting footsteps? Why not make a craft with them in Michael’s Kids Club? Every Saturday from 10:00 am to noon children can enjoy a craft project for $2.
