Kalamazoo Area Park Guide

Family-Friendly Kalamazoo Area Parks

Make having fun with the family a walk in the park!

What could be easier than planning a day at one of the many area parks? Parks can be enjoyed year round – spring, summer, fall and winter.

Our Kalamazoo Parks Guide only includes parent-recommended parks. Area moms and dads shared their favorite parks and told us why they love ’em. Our guide includes parks and playgrounds in Kalamazoo, Portage, Richland, Oshtemo, Parchment, and Plainwell.

Let us know if you know of a park that should be added by leaving us a comment.

Have fun and enjoy getting outside with your kids!

Kalamazoo

Upjohn Park | Lake & Walter

Upjohn Park is a large park that contains Kik Pool (which is an outdoor swimming pool) and also has a great “Boundless Playground”. This is a great park to go to after attending the Kalamazoo Farmer’s Market during the seasonal months.  We love how accessible this park is.

Markin Glenn Park | 5300 North Westnedge Avenue

Located in Northern Kalamazoo County and features a playground, swimming beach, tennis courts, scenic trails and picnic sites.  Note: there is no life guard at this beach. We love that you can access the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail very easily from this park.  Bring your bikes for a family bike ride and take a hike on the KRV Trail. There is an entrance fee for this park.

Portage

Celery Flats | 7335 Garden Lane

The area is equipped with playground facilities, a picnic area and walking trails in every direction.  In the summer, check out the fun entertainment series.  We love that you can take a break a Milham Park which also has a playground and use the Portage Pathway to head back for a good bike ride or walk.

Ramona Park| 8600 South Sprinkle Road

Ramona Park is one of our favorite parks in Portage! Ramona Park has a fully-staffed and lifeguarded beach in the summer. There is also a great accessible playground with a colorful soft surface. In the summer months, we love that the most of the playground is shaded.  During the summer months, there is an entry fee. Check there website for details.

Lakeview Park | 9345 Portage Road

Lakeview Park is a beautiful 24-acre park located along the shores of Austin Lake. Two piers provides fishing or lake viewing opportunities. The trail systems provides a variety of biking or hiking options. Enjoy the playground, tennis, or a great hike.

Oakland Drive Park| 7650 Oakland Drive

Oakland Drive Park is one of our “go to” parks when we are out in Portage. During the winter, the sledding hill is very populars with the kids. The tennis, softball, playground, basketball and volleyball facilities offers many outdoor recreational activities.

Haverhill Park | 6577 Hampton

Haverhill Park, a 4-acre site adjacent to Haverhill Elementary School, is a favorite stop on the Northwest Portage Bikeway. The roller hockey rink is a great place for children to develop skills or just to run around. Enjoy the playground with the kiddos or a picnic.

Richland

Richland Park | 5189 N 32nd St

This park is a favorite for Richland area locals. The park includes baseball diamonds, biking, hiking/walking, a playground, an open shelter house, and restrooms. We love the inside loop as a place to bike or take along a scooter.

Oshtemo

Oshtemo Township Park | 7275 W. Main St

The renovated park includes trails, picnic shelters, restrooms, a basketball court and a larger playground with separate areas for younger and older children.

The park includes 3 picnic shelter, restrooms, grills, playgrounds, walking trails, basketball courts, tennis courts, and more. In the summer months, from Tuesdays through Saturdays, there is a place where you can buy wood-fired pizzas from a local vendor.

Parchment

Kindleberger Park | 650 S Riverview Drive

The park is about forty acres and offers a lot of opportunities to walk and roam. The park has four baseball diamonds, two softball diamonds, two playground areas, three covered picnic pavilions, roller hockey and newly refurbished tennis courts,  and tons of paved walking paths. During the summer, this park has a great free summer concert series! This park is a great place to sled in the winter, too.

Plainwell

Sherwood Park | 121 N. Sherwood Ave.

Whenever we make the trip to Plainwell or Dean’s Ice Cream in Plainwell, we visit this park. It is located across M-89 is the public library and around the corner from Plainwell Ice Cream.

Sherwood Park has one large play structure which includes ladders, climbers, slides, steps, monkey bars and bridges.  We like to watch the river which is next to the park.  A veteran’s memorial is just adjacent to the park.
