Greater Kalamazoo Girls on the Run (“GOTR”) is preparing to host its TUTU RUN for the third year at Spring Valley Park in Kalamazoo on February 1, 2015 starting at 2:00 pm. Hundreds of tutu-clad women, men, dogs and children of all ages will be descending upon the park to support the Greater Kalamazoo Girls on the Run scholarship fund. The 2.2 mile family friendly fun run/walk is presented by Honor Credit Union. It is not a timed race and participants of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to run or walk.

Tutus are optional (but highly encouraged) and may be purchased with online registration or on the day of the event, in limited quantity. Participants are also encouraged to make their own homemade tutus at home! Many online tutorials are available, just by searching “Make a race tutu”. A tutu contest will take place prior to the run in 9 categories, including a new category for Best Dog in a Tutu. New prize baskets will be provided by area shops such as Kalamazoo’s Bella Patina and two grand prizes will be awarded from Bissell, valuing over $500 each. Registered runners of all ages may enter the tutu contest in the main tent starting at 1:00 pm on the day of the event. Get creative!

“Tutu Run is what we call ‘The Happiest 2.2 Miles of the Year’! It was created three years ago to bring the people of our community together in a fun, festive way after the New Year and before partaking in any Superbowl Sunday parties! It’s all about being active and having FUN– exactly the things we encourage throughout our Girls on the Run program. This is a healthy activity for the whole family, as we gear up for the beginning of our 2015 Girls on the Run Season at over 60 participating schools in Kalamazoo County.” said Melisa Ellis Beeson, Director of Greater Kalamazoo Girls on the Run.

ALL PROCEEDS SUPPORT GIRLS IN THE COMMUNITY

All proceeds generated from event registration will support girls in the community who may not be able to afford the Girls on the Run program participation fee. Last year, over $175,000 were awarded in scholarships by Girls on the Run when 66% of the nearly 1,900 girls served by Girls on the Run requested either full or partial financial support. The 2015 Girls on the Run program begins the week of March 2nd and will run through May 21nd when the program culminates with the annual Girls on the Run 5k at Western Michigan’s Waldo Stadium. Nearly 5,000 total runners and walkers participated in the 2014 Girls on the Run 5k event.

The Tutu Run is the most fun you and your family will ever have in tutus, together! The added benefit is that you are supporting the wonderful Girls on the Run program in our community though your participation. Join us!
