Rainy Day Activities

Rain rain, go away, come again- wait, scratch that, we have fun rainy day activities to do! Kalamazoo is full of fun things to do when the weather is dreary. We asked our Facebook readers for suggestions, and boy did they come through!

OUT AND ABOUT

Art Bayou

Here’s a suggestion for those of you with budding artists, the Art Bayou is a fun paint-your-own pottery studio where you can let your imagination run wild. This is a great creative outlet for those rainy day blues!

COST: The studio fee is $8 for adults and $6 for kids 12 and under. Add this to the price of the bisque and that is it for the entire day. Studio fee includes the use of the studio, stamps, stencils, paper, sponges, idea books and help from their experienced team. It also includes the glazing and firing process.

CONTACT: Located at The Shoppes at Stadium Drive 3306 Stadium Drive, Kalamazoo, MI 49008. Visit the Art Bayou website or call (269) 375-2600 for more details.

Airway Fun Center

If you are looking for something on the more active side for your rainy day out, another great choice is Airway Fun Center. Between the laser tag, bowling, bumper cars, and arcade games, your kids will probably be hoping for more rainy days!

COST:

Arcade: With many different games for all ages, the arcade boasts one of the largest arcades in the area. Just fill up a reloadable token card and swipe to play.

Bowling: The prices for bowling vary based on the day and time you will be visiting, so please refer to their bowling price guide on the Airway Lanes website for the most current information. They offer Laser Maze, Laser Tag, Bumper Cars, Balladium, and Time Freak as some of their activities.

Crossroads Mall Food Court

Now, for those of you with smaller children, a great new hangout spot is the newly updated play area located within the Crossroads Mall food court. Meet up with some other moms, grab some coffee, and let the little guys and gals burn some energy playing on the structures, and don’t forget the carousel!

COST: The play structures are free, and the carousel rides are $2 per person (adults accompanying small children are free).

CONTACT: Located at 6650 South Westnedge Avenue, Portage, Michigan 49024. Please visit the Crossroads Mall website or call (269) 327-6600 for more details.

STAYING AT HOME IDEAS

Themed Movie Marathon

Now, for those of you don’t want to get out the rain coats and puddle boots, fear not, we have plenty of fun things for you, too! Why not build some forts in the living room and have a themed movie marathon? You can make some snacks that go along with your theme. My personal suggestion would be to watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and indulge in some candy and chocolate! Or check out this movie listing by Scholatic for the Top 100 Greatest Movies for Kids.

Pinterest Baking Recipes

If you are in the baking mood on a rainy day, why not head over to Pinterest to find some yummy new recipes to try. You could make individual mini pies, with each family member getting to choose their own personalized filling. You could even have a contest and see who has the favorite flavor combinations!

Fort Building

Here’s one of my favorite activities to do on a rainy day, make a giant fort! You can use anything you have around your house, and the kids will have a blast. First, build a structure, be it with chairs, tables, boxes, or even a baby gate! Always check for safety of the structure though, especially with toddlers and small children. You can use cushions, bean bags, pillows, blankets, anything your heart desires! If you really want to get creative, you can find instructions on how to build a fort out of PVC pipes which lends itself to a more permanent play spot. The choices are endless and will give your kids their own special rainy day spot to read, draw, or use their imagination!

HAVE FUN!

Now that you’ve got such a fun list of rainy day activities, I bet you will be anxiously awaiting a dreary day so you have an excuse to stay inside.
