My son loves pirates! Yes, Jake and The Neverland Pirates, pirates ships (see our Pirate Chaser Adventure Cruise from this summer), and pirate costumes. So it was a no-brainer for us to head up to Grand Rapids on our first day off from school to check out the “Real Pirates” Special Exhibit at the Grand Rapids Museum in Grand Rapids.
Our Real Pirate Adventure Begins At Home
When we don’t have a regular school day, we call our day “homeschooling day”. We generally pick a topic to focus on and create some fun learning opportunities around the theme. For our first “no school day”, we chose a pirate theme with the end of our learning to view the Real Pirate Exhibit. I printed the Teacher’s Resource Packet early in the day and picked out some items to discuss with my son prior to our visit.
About The Exhibit
Real Pirates is a touring exhibition organized by National Geographic and Premier Exhibitions, Inc. The exhibit includes items such as:
- Video introduction to the exhibit
- Real coins, jewelry, and cannons (my son’s favorites were the cannons)
- Replica of the actual ship
- Information with the history of the Whydaf and other facts about the time period
If your kiddos really like pirates, then this is a fun exhibit for them. If they’re not excited about pirates, then I’d suggest the exhibit for the older kiddos i.e. 10 years old or older for them to understand and enjoy the exhibit.
