Wow! Libraries in and around Kalamazoo have an astonishing number of free, fun and educational reading programs scheduled throughout the Summer. Make sure to also check out the reading games offered at your local branch, it is a great way to encourage your child to read! Enjoy!

Sign up for any of our free summer reading programs online at www.summerfun.portagelibrary info or visit the Portage District Library starting June 4th for a summer full of exciting adventures and quiet escapes! Happy Reading!

Pre-Readers Activity Guide

Make animal noises together, sing songs, and create an alphabet book! These are just a sample of the many fun activities to share with your child which helps them build a foundation for future reading.  Ask us for the sticker sheet to use as a guide.  (May be done in addition to the “Read to Me” program.)

Read To Me Summer Reading Program

If you have little ones who aren’t reading yet (entering kindergarteners and younger), sign them up for the “Read to Me” program. For every 5 hours that you read to them, they receive a prize!

Elementary Summer Reading Program

Kids earn prizes for reading (or listening to) books of their choice throughout the summer.  Earn a prize for every 5 hours that you read (up to 30 hours).

Family Reading Adventure

Complete quests by reading a specific type of book, attending a library event, or trying a new activity!  Get points to earn special buttons.

Teen Summer Reading Program

Earn a prize every week that you finish a book! Open to students entering middle school in the fall through graduating high school seniors.

Adult Summer Reading Program

Chart your course by joining the Adult Summer Reading Program at Portage District Library and take part in a raffle to win a grab bag of gifts.   Anyone 18 and over is eligible to join.

How to Play

It’s simple! Read or listen to books for at least 20 minutes a day. Check off each day on your gameboard that you read 20 minutes. When you read 20 minutes a day for a total of 15 days, bring your gameboard to the library for a reward.

Note: The 15 days do not need to be consecutive. You qualify for a reward as soon as the number of days you read equal 15.

Reading Rewards

There are 90 reading days from Monday, June 2, through the game’s end on Saturday, August 30. You may complete four, 15-day reading segments within those 90 days so you may earn up to four reading rewards.

Claim Your Reward

When it’s time to claim a reward, please bring your game board to the library to report the days you have read. If you misplace your game board, you may receive a replacement from the library.

Please report all game play at least 15 minutes before the library closes. All rewards must be redeemed no later than Saturday, August 30 at 5 pm. No exceptions.

Bonus Reward

This summer, you can earn a KPL bag by showing us that you love KPL! There are 20 bonus activities listed. By completing 10 bonus activities between June 2 and August 30, you are eligible to receive a KPL bag.

Bonus prizes must be redeemed no later than Saturday, August 30 at 5 pm. No exceptions.

Summer Reading Clubs Program 2014

Reading programs run from June 16 – August 22.

The Rubber Ducky Reading Club

Parchment Library’s Read to My Baby program for infants – 35 months. Pick up an activity calendar and share the activities with your child.  Turn your calendar in after August 22 for a rubber duckie.

Fizz Boom Readers Club

Register to read for prizes. For kids ages 3-10. Pick up a reading log with instructions beginning June 16.

Spark a Reaction Summer Reading Club

You read, you choose, you win!  Earn a raffle ticket for each book you read between June 16 –August 22. For tween & teens ages 11-17. Choose which raffle to enter! Win gift cards to your favorite retailers!

Show Us Your Summer!

Photo Contest for students in grades 1-12

Begins June 16.  Show us your world this summer!  Take a photo with your camera, cell or webcam and enter our photo contest!  **Details available at the library or on the library’s website.**  Students (or parent of student) must have a Parchment Community Library card in good standing to enter.

Getting kids excited about science through reading!!!

Registration begins June 16th at 9 am, phone registrations are accepted after 11am.

Age groups are as follows:

  • 3 years old-Kindergarten
  • 1st-3rd Grades
  • 4th-5th Grades
  • Sixth graders may choose 5th grade or middle school.

Coupons from a variety of sponsors are offered upon completion of every two books! Please note that prizes are based on availability.

Completed forms must be turned in by July 26th.

Both Summer Reading Club and Math & Reading Skills Clubs are offered from June 23-August 16, 2014. Registration is required and reading begins on June 16. Checking in and other activities begin on June 23rd.

Reading this summer can earn you small prizes in our weekly drawings and chances for larger prizes at the end of the reading program. You will also be earning tickets for our Reading Party on August 20th. The more you read, the more tickets you will earn for playing games and redeeming prizes at the Reading Party.

Miranda Summer Reading Club And Wood-TV8

is sponsoring Summer Reading Programs at Public Libraries in Michigan. Comstock Township Library has partnered with WOODTV8 to give you a chance to win larger prizes

Special Statewide Grand Prize: A family getaway to Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio!

Other Statewide Prizes: A family membership to the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids.

To be eligible for this drawing you must be in grades 1-12. You earn your entry form by finishing our reading program. Extra entry forms may be earned by repeating the entire program. All entries for this drawing are due by August 8, 2014. The Comstock Township Library is allowed to draw only 2 names to send to WOTV 4.

Reading Club Procedures:

Register at the Young People’s Desk and take home your reading log.

    • Record the total pages of the book once you have read all of it. (Book titles are recorded for Read to Me + Gr. 1-2)
    • At check in, you will move your token on the bulletin board, deposit your entry form for our weekly drawing, and pick up any prizes earned.
    • You may come to the library anytime we are open to check in for the reading club.
    • Please do not report in for the reading club 15 minutes before or after a scheduled program, or 1/2 hour before the library closes. We are very busy at these times and it isn’t fair to your child to “rush” through check in.
    • ONLY COMSTOCK LIBRARY BOOKS COUNT FOR THE SUMMER READING PROGRAM. Graphic novels, audio books, board books, books from home, other libraries, or read before June 16 will not count. E-books will count if they have been checked out through our Overdrive or Axis 360 site. Participation in our program is an “on your honor” event.

Math and Reading Skills Club procedures:

    • For every 5 math worksheets turned in and corrected with a score of 80% or higher you will earn 2 scoops of ice cream to eat in the library. (Toppings available)
    • For every 5 reading skill worksheets turned in and corrected with a score of 80% or higher you will earn a large cookie.
    • Correcting skill sheets takes time, so please do not plan to turn them in and get the reward in the same day. Please check the next time you visit the library to see if you have earned your treat. Alternative prizes may be available for children with food allergies only.

Mark your calendar for the Summer Reading Party to be held on Wednesday, August 20 from 5:30 pm-7:30 pm.

Summer Ready Program

Fizz Boom Read!

Fizz Boom Read is the theme of this year’s summer reading program which begins the 3rd week in June. We have reading programs and fun activities for ages 0-18. The summer calendar of events will be available at both circulation desks after Memorial Day.

Read – to Me Reading Club

This is for our non-readers. After 10 books are read, your “reader” can pick out a prize from the bottom shelf in the display case by the drinking fountains. All needed paperwork is down at the children’s circ desk.

Junior Book Buck Reading Club

Beginning readers up through 2nd grade (this fall) keep track of their pages read. After reading 100 pages, your reader earns 1 “Book Buck” and can cash it in for a prize in the display case by the drinking fountains. All needed paperwork is down at the children’s circ desk.

Book Buck Reading Club

This level is for our 3rd graders (this fall) through 5th grade ( this fall ). After reading 250 pages, your reader earns 1 “Book Buck” and can cash it in for a prize in the display case by the drinking fountains. All needed paperwork is down at the children’s circ desk.

Tweens and Teens

( 6th grade this fall and older ) can read 10 hours and receive a prize at the children’s circulation desk. All needed paperwork is down at the children’s circulation desk.

The last day to pick out a prize is Friday August 8…….we close at 5:00!

Plan on registering your children for our annual summer reading program on Wednesday, June 18 from 11:00 – 12:00 across the street at the “Park Party”! Local “celebrities will be reading their favorite pictures books. Don’t forget your blankets, chairs and bug spray!

Imagination’s Destination

Barnes and Noble is offering a wonderful reading program this Summer, Imagination’s Destination. Pick up a form at Barnes and Noble and read!

  • All children, Kindergarten through 6th Grade are invited to participate.
  • Readers can earn a free book after reading eight books.
  • Starting May 30th, readers can pick up a form and get reading! The program ends September 2nd.

Please note that the program can only be completed once and the free book must be chosen from a limited selection. This is a fantastic way to start off Summer!

Getting kids excited about science.

Sign-up starts June 16th at 10 am. each child must be registered individually and in person.

There are programs for preschoolers, school aged children and teens.

Prizes are offered weekly as long as the participant completes 140 minutes of reading.

The Summer Reading Program ends on July 31 with a party at the United Methodist Church. There will be prizes, games, face painting and fun from 2 pm- 4 pm.
