USS Silversides

USS Silversides-1

by Jill P

We’ve visited the USS Silversides located in Muskegon a number of times over the past few years. My seven year-old son is a lover all all boats and visiting real submarine is just up his alley. You’ll love the tour of the submarine and the USS Silversides Museum. It’s definitely worth the trip and makes a great day trip from Kalamazoo.

A GREAT SUBMARINE

Tour a restored WWII Submarine, a Prohibition-Era Coast Guard Cutter and wonderful exhibits at this maritime museum. Self-guided tours let you experience what it was really like to sail a sub trolling the waters of the South Pacific 60-plus years ago. You can walk the deck topside as well as the major internal compartments below deck. Your tour also includes access to the Coast Guard Cutter McLane and the museum.

TOURING THE MUSEUM

Situated on the south side of the Muskegon Lake Channel near beautiful Lake Michigan, the USS SILVERSIDES Submarine Museum has been the home of the World War II submarine USS Silversides since 1987. In addition to the Silversides, the USS SILVERSIDES Submarine Museum is also home to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter McLane, a Prohibition-era Coast Guard Cutter that is one of the last of its class in existence.

During our USS Silversides tour we learned the history of the submarine and about what life would have been like if you were part of the crew during that time. There are plenty of opportunities to view the submarine controls (a favorite of my son’s) and plenty of weapons. The small spaces such as the doors and living quarters, make you appreciate what it would be like to live on a submarine for an extensive period of time.
