Visiting Fort Wayne With Kids: Ideas For Your Next Visit

Just a short drive across eastbound I-94 and another down southbound I-69 will land you in the second largest city in Indiana – Fort Wayne. 

If your family is looking for a fun road trip just an hour and 45 minutes southeast, Fort Wayne might be the perfect place to visit! You’ll find plenty to do for family fun. Check out some of our ideas on what to discover, where to play, and where to dine. 

Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo

Rated as one of the “top ten zoos in the nation,” the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo does not disappoint! Your kids will love riding the ponies and horses, riding the carousel and the train around the zoo.

This kids’ zoo is a great place to let your kids experience the wild side of the world. Your little ones will love seeing all the animals up close. The zoo has everything from monkeys to sharks and everything in between.

If you want to add to the adventure, you can ride on the railroad, the carousel, the Sky Safari Ride, or the Crocodile Creek Adventure Ride. You can even meet an animal during a VIP experience! Choose between a penguin, giraffe, stingray, or orangutan.

Admission to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is $14 for adults and $10 for kids, and it is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm during the regular season. Make sure you check their website for the dates of their regular season.

Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory

Nature-loving families will enjoy a trip to the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory in downtown Fort Wayne, located just four minutes away from Science Central.

Introduce your kids to the wonder of the world’s plant life! In this botanical conservatory, you can walk through a variety of biomes to see species from all over the planet. Most of the displays are year-round, but there is also a seasonal display that rotates with the seasons. Come in the spring to see the butterfly garden!

Visitors to the Conservatory will enjoy seasonally-changing garden designs, art displays, and hands-on experiences. There are numerous family events held throughout the year as well. 

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 3-17. Children under 2 are admitted for free.

The conservatory is open Tuesday-Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Thursday 10:00 am to 8:00 pm and Sunday 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Science Central

Play

Your little scientists will love all there is to discover at Science Central, which is the most-visited museum in the city of Fort Wayne.

Over 130 hands-on activities await your family, including the high-rail bike. There is a special area called Kids Central, perfect for visitors ages 2 through 7-years old, where they can explore a giant piano keyboard, a water table and water activities, bubble windows and Fort Discovery play area.

Little scientists can enjoy two whole floors of STEM fun in a variety of disciplines. Test your eyes for colorblindness, see a life-sized dino model, or watch a silly live show! Your kids won’t want to leave.

Children 2 and under are admitted for free, and everyone 3 and up is $9. There are several discounts available and listed on the Science Central website.

Science Central is open Wednesday – Friday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Sunday from 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm. 

Fort Wayne Splash Pad

Fort Wayne is home to numerous parks around the city, with several splash pads to keep your kids happy and cool on warm summer days. Ready to eat? We’ve got you covered on some unique, family-friendly restaurants in Fort Wayne.

 

If your family is looking for a unique ice cream experience, look no further than Yummi Bunni in downtown Fort Wayne. Ask for a Yummi Bun and you will receive delicious ice cream centered between two halves of a sliced doughnut.

Yummi Bunni opened in November of 2016 and has been serving up house-made flavors like Green Tea, Bourbon Espresso and Blue Moon ever since.

Yummy Bunni is located right next to Coney Island which is a great place to grab a quick bite. A must-visit restaurant located in downtown Fort Wayne, Coney Island has been a local favorite for over 100 years. Owned and operated by the same family since 1916, families love the easily affordable prices of this hot dog eatery.

Guests at Coney Island enjoy friendly, fast service and a cozy atmosphere that keeps people coming back for more.

Other family-friendly places to grab a bite to eat are the Hoppy Gnome and Park Place on Main.

Plus, who can resist grabbing a sweet treat from DeBrand Fine Chocolates.
