Meow, meow! Woof, woof! That might just be the sounds of your future family pet calling to you! There are so many friendly dogs and cats who are in need of a new forever home, and we would love to help you find your new family member. My own family experienced pet adoption through the Kalamazoo Animal Rescue and we couldn’t be happier with our black cat, Koby!

KAR is a no kill shelter and does their best to keep their animals placed with foster families while awaiting adoption. These foster families are KAR volunteers who provide a caring and nurturing atmosphere that allows them to gain an understanding of the animal’s needs and personality traits. The foster families work with KAR adoption counselors to match the animals with just the right family.
KAR frequently holds adoption events at local pet stores all around the greater Kalamazoo area. Check out their Facebook page or website to stay up to date with the locations of these events. We adopted our loving, male cat at an adoption event and the entire process went quite smoothly. I was incredibly impressed at the great lengths KAR went to match us with a cat that would best suit a family with young children.

The SPCA is a great non-profit shelter that seeks to save all animals suffering from homelessness, abuse, and common “pound” issues such as sickness, malnourishment, and under-socialization. The SPCA offers several ways to donate through fundraisers and benefits, and have lots of opportunities to volunteer.
If you are interested in adopting an animal from the SPCA, the first step is visit their Pet Rescue Center. If you have other pets in the home they even offer the chance to bring them in for a pet “meet and greet” to see how the animals react to each other. The only problem here is deciding which lovable pet to choose!

The KRP is committed to saving at-risk pets in pound facilities by giving them a safe temporary home, medical care, and loving socialization. Before the dogs or cats are classified as ready for adoption, they are given a health check to make sure they have received all of the care required. All puppies and kittens are up to date on their shots and will come with a voucher to cover spaying or neutering if they have not yet been spayed or neutered.
This animal rescue shelter is staffed by only volunteers, which keeps the administrative costs of running the shelter to a minimum. Over 95 cents of each dollar received in donation goes to the rescue, care, and placement of homeless pets! Make sure you check out their website for a schedule of adoption events, which occur almost every Saturday.

KCAS is a lesser known pet adoption possibility. Adopting a pet is a legal process in which the ownership of an animal is transferred from KCAS to the new owner. KCAS advertises their available pets through many channels, from PetFinder to Facebook. Once you find an animal you are interested you can set up an appointment by calling the office. You will be able to interact with the animal and get the necessary application filled out.
All of KCAS animals are up to date on their shots, medical care, and have been spayed or neutered. The animals are also micro-chipped before adoption. This is a great option to save an animal from being homeless, and to give a pet the love they deserve!
