We LOVE the fall! There is something extra special about all of the great Fall family activities. This year, there is a bounty of family fun to be had…without breaking the bank.

10 FREE (or Affordable) FAMILY EVENTS


Here are some of our top picks for affordable family fun this month:

1. Flick’s Family Film Festival | Running September 2 through October 27.

Head over to Celebration Cinema for their fall movie line-up. FREE movies for kids 12 and under. Adults are just $5. Celebration Cinema, 6600 Ring Road, Portage.

2. FreeQuent FMG Movie Series at the Kalamazoo 10 | Running September 9 through November 9. Movies start at 9:00 am and 10:00 am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Goodrich Quality Theaters has kicked-off a new FreeQuent FMG Movie Series beginning September 9. Those belonging to our Frequent Moviegoer Club (FMG) will be able to see movies of their FMG Movie Series for free. Non-members will be charged $1.00 per ticket. See link above for fall movie line-up including movie tittles such as Norm of the North, Angry Birds Movie, The Secret Life of Pets, and Minions. All Goodrich movie theaters including the Kalamazoo 10, 820 Maple Hill Drive, Kalamazoo.

3. Allegan County Fair | September 7-17.

This great county fair in Allegan is such a gem. Activities include: carnival rides, interesting exhibits, entertainment, tasty food and more. Admission is $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for kids, kindergarten and under get in FREE. Saturday, September 9 is Children’s Day where kids get in FREE until 3:00 pm. September 10 the entire carload gets in for $15.00 before 3:00 pm. Allegan County Fairgrounds, 150 Allegan Co. Fair Dr.Allegan.

4. Touch-A-Tractor | Saturday, September 10 from 9:00 am-8:00 pm and Sunday, September 11 from 10:00 am-6:00 pm.

Help Gull Meadow Farms kick off the Fall Season with our 3rd Annual Touch-A-Tractor Event AND Grandparent’s Weekend at the farm! Stop by for this FREE event where you and your family will have the opportunity to climb on many different types of tractors. Touch-A-Tractor is FREE, however, if you choose to participate in any other fun farm activities at Gull Meadow Farms, you must pay admission to enter activity areas. Gull Meadow Farms, 8544 Gull Rd, Richland.



5. Outdoor Youth Day | Saturday, September 10 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Join the fun at the FREE event. Kids activities include: hiking, archery, bird watching, fishing, target Shooting, biking, trapping, canoeing and Kayaking, and more. Historic Charlton Park, 2545 S. Charlton Park Rd, Hastings.

6. Come Forth Into the Past: Demonstrations of Medieval Skill | September 10 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm.

Join the fun at the Portage District Library where you can learn all about living in the medieval era. Music, live demonstrations, and more. FREE. Portage District Library, 300 Library Lane, Portage.

7. Twice As Long Ice Cream Sundae! | September 17 at 12:00 pm.

Pack the minivans and bring everyone you know to the World’s Longest Ice Cream Sundae! Over 200 tables will take over M-66; we will need a lot of help eating all that ice cream! To participate in breaking the world record, you need to buy a color changing souvenir spoon. $2 spoons will be available for pre-purchase at area merchants. Spoons purchased day of the event will be $3. (Bowls will be available at the event for the actual eating of ice cream.) Nashville Route 66, Michigan-See Facebook event for parking information.

8. Kalamazoo Balloon Festival | September 16-18.

The Kalamazoo Balloon Fest will be held at Gull Meadow Farms on September 16-18. Activities include: balloon launches, car show, music, balloon glow (Friday and Saturday ONLY). Normal admission prices for Gull Meadow Farms apply for the activities at Gull Meadow Farms. Viewing the balloons is FREE. Gull Meadow Farms, 8544 Gull Rd, Richland.

9. Batman Day | September 17.

Join the fun at the 3rd annual Batman Day celebrating the Dark Knight’s enduring legacy. The event will include activities, trivia, coloring, and much more. Cosplay welcome! FREE. Barnes and Noble, 6134 S Westnedge Ave, Portage. Kalamazoo Public Library also has some Batman Day fun going on.


10. Art Prize 2016 | September 21 – October 9.

Join the excitement at the Art Prize in Grand Rapids with over 1,453 entries at 171 venues makes this a great place to introduce your kids to art. Stay tuned as we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite pieces and tips for parents from a local mom. Free. Various locations through downtown and greater Grand Rapids.
