Every 9/11, Volunteer Kalamazoo rallies the community to do good deeds, to remember by doing. This year, Volunteer Kalamazoo is offering the community and families a chance to give back together.

Our KZOOkids readers have asked for us to share opportunities to volunteer in the community and this is one of our favorite volunteer events!

We participated last year as a family and had a lot of fun. We loved that we were able to volunteer together and felt good about giving something back to our community. We were also impressed at how well organized and family friendly this event is.

We’re already registered to participate in this year’s event. We asked about age restrictions and were told that the event is designed for families with younger children. “If they can color and paint, they will be able to participate”, says Monica Priest Volunteer Kalamazoo’s Program Manager.

What Is Family Day Of Service?

The event will bring more than a dozen service projects into one convenient place for families with kids of all ages. Projects range from assembling disaster preparedness kits for the American Red Cross to creating and decorating a positive message board for the Comstock Community Center.

This Day of Service is open to all, but the service projects and format are geared toward families with kids of all ages that want to teach their kids about the importance of volunteering. Parents are encouraged to do service right alongside their kids (very young children may require assistance) and families can come and go anytime during the event.
