Summer is on the horizon and the last school bell will soon be ringing.  We’re all looking for things to keep the kids engaged, and we would like to do so in the most sensible way.  June is bursting with FREE or inexpensive movie nights, concerts, and hands on activities across Kalamazoo and southwest Michigan.  

Check out our picks for must-try activities for all ages. We’ve list over 25 events that are free (or reasonably priced) to enjoy with the family this June!

Free June Fun for Kids in Kalamazoo – 2018

Have you signed up for the Kids Bowl Free Program? Registered kids receive two free games of bowling each day of the program – all summer long. Great for a rainy day outing.

Friday, June 1st

Just Move Playdate 

Just Move Fitness and More, Portage | 10:30 AM-12:00 PM

Enjoy the tot-friendly obstacle course for indoor free play and get to know other caregivers! There will be dancing and upbeat music in a “baby disco”. $5 per family or FREE for Just Move members. No pre-registration required. Just drop-in show up for fun!

Free Movie in the Park – Coco (Three Rivers)

Three Rivers Farmers Market and Three Rivers City Hall, Three Rivers | 7:00 PM-9:00 PM

Bring your family out to Memory Isle Park, behind LA Cafe to enjoy a free viewing of the movie, Coco.

Movies in the Park: Justice League

Celery Flats, Portage | 9:00 PM

Portage Movies in the Park Summer Series returns with the Justice League. The movie will start around 9:00 pm or shortly after. Seating will be on the lawn in front of the Grain Elevator, so bring a blanket or chair! Popcorn will be available for purchase.

Saturday, June 2nd

Home Depot Kids Workshop – Portage

Home Depot, Portage | 9:00 AM-12:00 PM

Share the nostalgic pastime of car modeling with your child in a classic car hands-on workshop. Together you can build a vintage General Motors-style wooden car to put on display or take for a ride “with no particular place to go. Once your vehicle is built, your child can customize it with paint and stickers. Recommended Ages: 5-12.

Let the kids explore their creativity while you shop! Only $2 for ages 3 and up, or $5 for ages 5 and up (per child) reserves 30 minutes for your creative kid.

Do-Dah Parade

Time for a favorite family-friendly parade in Kalamazoo. You won’t want to miss the wackiness and fun of the annual Do-Dah Parade. The parade has been part of the Kalamazoo landscape for 33 years. 


Magic Show at the American Museum of Magic

Kids love magic – head over to Marshall for some abracadabra! Admission: Adults, $5, Children $3.50, Under 5 are free.

Meet the Lake Michigan Mermaid

Bike the Zoo’s Community Bike Ride

National Chocolate Ice Cream Day at All Stirred Up!

Post Band Concert Series

Festival Market Square, Battle Creek | 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Pack a lawn chair and head over to Battle Creek and listen to some great music at the outdoor concert at the Festival Market Square. Additional dates in June include: June 14, 21, and 28.

Lunchtime Live! Presented by Lake Michigan Credit Union

Bronson Park, Kalamazoo | 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM

Live music, great scenery, fun summertime games, and amazing food. Get the family out of the house and head to Bronson Park in Downtown Kalamazoo for a Friday afternoon on the town.


Saturday, June 9th

Cereal Fest

Downtown Battle Creek | 8:00 AM-12:00 PM

You won’t want to miss annual event that celebrates Battle Creek’s history as the birthplace of cereal.

Grab some cereal from one of the many booths and sit at the World’s Longest Breakfast Table.  There will be entertainment on the main stage, as well as various vendor booths. Have the kids get their picture taken with Tony the Tiger or Toucan Sam! Make sure to stay for the Cereal Festival Parade, beginning at 12:00 PM.


Feast of the Strawberry Moon 2018

Harbor Island, Grand Haven | 9:00 AM-4:00 PM

Step back in time and interact with historians and re-enactors in a natural setting on Harbor Island in Grand Haven. The family-oriented event will offer approximately 250 re-enactors, entertainers, demonstrators, Artisans and period vendors to provide the experience of the 18th century.  Daily Admission – $5 per person or $15 per family


Kids Bike Race at WMU BTR Park

WMed Innovation Center, WMU BTR Park, Kalamazoo | 12:00 PM

Kids, ages 2-12, are invited to participate in a FREE Kid’s race held at noon at the WMU BTR Park. No registration is required. Show up at the BTR Park with a bike or riding toy to participate.

Three Rivers Summer Programs in the Park

Scidmore Park Petting Zoo, Three Rivers | 1:00 PM

FREE educational programs will be held in the pavilion just outside the zoo gates at Scidmore Park, rain or shine. Dates in June include:

June 9 – Bunny Bonanza:  Join the Kalamazoo Rabbit Rescue to enjoy an exciting selection of rabbits. Learn how to care for them, and of course get to pet a few.

June 16 – Water Festival

June 23 – Wildlife Neighbors:  The Kalamazoo Nature Center presents this interactive program, which includes a live hawk!

June 30 – Exotic Pet Birds:  Interact with and learn about a wide variety of exotic pet birds.

The Corn Fed Girls at Oshtemo’s Music in the Park

In addition to the outdoor concert, there will be hands-on art and activities for kids. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Food will be available for purchase or bring a picnic dinner.

Sign up for our Summer Reading Program at the Portage Distract Library and be sure to stay for some family-friendly fun. There will be all-ages activities, scavenger hunts and more! Grown-ups who need a little refreshment can stop by the coffee bar  or check out our Friends’ Mini Book Sale.

Families are welcome for a special storytime to celebrate Dads. Kids can make a Father’s Day card at the craft station.

Kevin Schwartz, an Otsego native who lives in Wisconsin, is known as the juggling “balloon” guy. He’s sure to astound the kids with his twisted creations and juggling talents.

Oshtemo Movies in the Park

Come to Oshtemo park and see a viewing of  Disney’s Moana . Movie starts at dusk and enjoy free popcorn compliments of Kalamazoo 10 Theater.

3C for Kids (Cereal City Con)

Bring your kiddos to meet their TV hero’s live in person, take some pictures, play some games, facepainting and other free family fun.


Tuesday, June 26th

Teen Cake Decorating Competition at Portage District Library

Portage District Library, Portage | 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Have fun competing with other teens in a cake decorating contest! Prizes will be given for the best designs. Participants can work in teams or individually. All cakes and decorations will be provided at the event. Open to middle school and high school students, registration is required for this event.

Wednesday, June 27th

Nerf War! (Grades K-5) at KPL Washington Square Branch

Kalamazoo Public Library – Washington Square Branch, Kalamazoo | 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Are you Nerf enough? Run, dodge, and dive as you outwit and out-blast the competition at this Nerf mobile game event. Best for grades K-5. Registration required.

Free Day at Kids ‘N’ Stuff
