It’s March and we are feeling LUCKY!

Lucky that warmer weather will soon be here and lucky that there are so many FREE or nearly free events all around the Kalamazoo area. The March calendar is filled with library story times, open swimming, special expos, craft shows and other family fun events that won’t empty your “pot o’gold.”

Don’t forget, March kicks off FREE movies with the return of Flick’s Family Film Festival at Celebration Cinema! and GQT Morning Movies at Kalamazoo 10 theater.

Friday, March 1

Kids of all ages – join Kalamazoo Smiles on Tooth Fairy Day. Tooth Fairy day will include a FREE dental exam and x-rays for children 12 years and younger. Go for a ride in the dentist chair, get to play with our water sprayer, learn about your teeth, and have some fun.

The 2019 Kalamazoo Women’s LifeStyle Expo takes place at the Kalamazoo County Expo Center. Come enjoy shopping, networking, and performances with friends.

Attend The Secret of the Cardboard Rocket at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. Join in the story of two children who build a rocket out of a cardboard box and take a fantastical voyage through the solar system with the help of a magical book and their own vivid imaginations.

Explore downtown Kalamazoo and enjoy an evening of art exhibits and events at the monthly Art Hop.

Catch some air during Parachute Playtime at Ransom District Library. This activity is recommended for children who are at least three years old.

Build a Clock Tray with your kids during the hands-on Home Depot Kids Project.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with Comstock Township Library. Whether your favorite is ‘The Cat in the Hat’, ‘Horton Hears a Who’, or another timeless classic, enjoy a storytime, crafts, and birthday cake. Every child will also receive a FREE book for Read Across America Day.

Listen to the March free Crybaby concert, Whiskey Before Breakfast – Celtic Music. Music from the Celtic tradition including jigs, reels, hornpipes, and all manner tunes and songs.

Pretend you are somewhere tropical during Open Swim at the Allegan Aquatic Center. Enjoy a lazy river, slide, basketball hoop, fountains and warm water.

The WMU Gabel Natatorium opens to the community on weekends for open swim. Admission ranges $3-$4 for each member of the family and features an obstacle course, pool toys, diving boards, lap lanes, and a lifeguard.

Watch storefront and windows of participating downtown businesses come alive during the first annual March Mannequins event in Downtown St. Joseph. Dozens of community volunteers will pose perfectly still, like mannequins. Come and vote for your favorite.

Monday, March 4

Join a daily Circle Time at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum, Monday-Saturday. These literacy-based 20 minute programs are free of charge to families and preschool groups.

Build whatever you can create with the bricks at Ransom District Library’s Build-O-Rama. Your creations will be on display all week.

Take part in early literacy activities such as singing, rhyming and reading at Preschool Storytime at Comstock Township Library, followed by a sensory playtime.

Tuesday, March 5

Grow a reader at Family Storytime at Portage District Library. Join to sing, play, rhyme and listen to stories. All ages are welcome.

Catch a movie every Tuesday during $5 Ticket Tuesday at the AMC Theatre with an AMC Stubs Membership.

Have an indoor blast at Full Blast in Battle Creek for drop-in open gym time at $2 per child. A small amount of play equipment is provided.

Discover STEAM concepts at Otsego District Library. Drop in each week and choose one or more stations to investigate and explore. For K through 5th grade.

Wednesday, March 6

Looking for a great opportunity for your three to five-year-old to practice their independence? You can attend I’m a Big Kid NOW:  Independent Storytime at the Portage District Library. Your “big kid” will listen to lengthier stories, learn rhymes, move to music, and learn the mystery letter of the week on their own.

Let your toddler get some energy out during Toddler Open Play at Kingdom Sports. Available on Mondays and Wednesdays, year round.

Learn, play and improve your chess skills during Chess Club at Otsego District Library. Open to students in elementary through high school.

Thursday, March 7

Enjoy Family Fun Time at the Allegan Aquatic Center on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Enjoy a lazy river, slide, fountains and warm water.

Come to the Story Place at the Kalamazoo Public Library  Washington Branch and engage in play for early learning. For children ages one to five with a caregiver, siblings welcome.

Friday, March 8

Get the wiggles out with singing, dancing, movement activities, and sensory play during Music and Movement at Otsego District Library. Occurs every Friday in March.

Held every Friday morning at the South Haven Memorial Library, Tunebugs is a drop-in music exploration program for children ages one through five. Sing songs, explore instruments and have some musical family fun.

Teens can hang out at Teen Scene at the Otsego Library each week to play games, watch movies and have fun. Featuring Xbox, Kinect, Nintendo Wii gaming systems and some exciting tabletop games.

Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Air Zoo Flight Innovation Center. Featuring a musical performance by the Mattawan High School Choir, special guest Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson, and the Black Wings: American Dreams of Flight Exhibit. Admission is FREE.

Saturday, March 9

Become an Art Detective at the Kalamazoo Institute of Art, admission is free. The program teaches children ages four to eight (with an adult) how to look at and appreciate art through storytelling, guided looking and art-making.

Celebrate the sweetness of the season at KNC’s 54th Annual Maple Sugar Festival this weekend. Experience the maple sugaring process up close. Taste the sugary deliciousness of pure maple syrup on top of your pancakes and enjoy a cup of maple-flavored coffee to begin your day. Afterward, take a guided outdoor tour. Fee applies.

Monday, March 11

Join Portage District Library with your little one and have fun as you sing, read, rhyme and play during Baby & Toddler Storytime. A developmentally appropriate playtime will follow.

Tuesday, March 12

Attend Wee Ones Storytime at Comstock Township Library for simple stories, songs, and rhymes chosen to build awareness of language and vocabulary.

Talk Anime during Anime Club at Otsego District Library. Discuss your favorite Anime/Manga artists, shows and games, or share your own art and fan-fiction. Event geared for tweens and teens.

Enjoy fun stories, songs, crafts and more during Preschool Story Hour at Schoolcraft Library. For children ages three to five.

Friday, March 15

Looking for a storytime for the whole family? Visit Family Storytime at Kalamazoo Public Library Central Branch. Enjoy stories, songs, fingerplays, and fun activities designed for preschoolers from birth to age five.

Saturday, March 16

Green is the color of the day in downtown Kalamazoo as you celebrate  St. Patrick’s day with the 19th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Bring the kids and join park rangers for story time in front of the fireplace at the Schrier Park indoor facility for Reading Rangers. A ranger-led activity or hike will follow.

Visit Cornwell’s Turkeyville for their Community Bazaar. You’ll find all kinds of things from crafts to clothing from local churches and vendors.

Think you can recreate fabulous cupcake designs? Maybe you can!  Learn some basic decorating techniques and give it your best shot at Cupcake Decorating at the Three Rivers Library.

Ransom District Library’s Story Time is a great place for children to make friends and enhance their early literacy skills: Singing, playing, reading, writing and talking.

Tuesday, March 19

Sing, dance and play with friends at Tiny Tots at Otsego District Library. Times are split up into age groups of infant to one and two to three.

Enjoy some one on one time with your 18-36 month-old during Tot Time at Schoolcraft Library.  Learn songs and rhymes, identifying colors, counting and reading.

Stop by Art Club at Richland Community Library and let the creativity flow in this fun, free art program. They provide the art materials; you bring your brilliant creative mind.

Explore the various aspects of STEAM and investigate a different theme each month during STEAM Adventures at Comstock Township Library. For children in Kindergarten through fifth grade.

The Original Spring Craft Show- Kalamazoo County Expo Center is back with 144 vendors. Free admission and parking.

Learn about Kalamazoo County Ready 4’s at the Family Fun Event at the Union Cabaret & Grille. Families can enjoy a morning of entertainment including face painting, magicians, crafts, mindfulness yoga, and a silent auction opportunity available to raise funds for the program.

Join the Crossroad Mall’s Spring Craft and Vendor Market. There will be crafters and vendors to help with your spring shopping needs.

Come and see LIVE LLAMAS. Visit the Otsego District Library for Llama, Llama, Fun for All ‘Ya event. Three llamas will be on hand for you to meet, pet and learn more about. Enjoy reading Llama books together, eating llama snacks, and making a llama craft.

Let your child get creative at Michael’s. Only $2 for ages three and up, or $5 for ages five and up (per child) reserves 30 minutes for a Gnome Sweet Gnome Project. Available at the Portage and Battle Creek locations.

Enjoy a family-friendly afternoon at the Gilmore Car Museum featuring the 1968 feature film, Herbie: The Love Bug Movie Matinee. Cost is $5 per person, children under 11 are free.

Come for the pizza, stay for the fun at Pizza & Pages Teen & Tween Book Club at Otsego District Library. Share with the group what you are reading. Pizza and refreshments will be provided.

Learn about nature at the Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery Nature PreSchool Aged Program. Enjoy a guided nature program followed by a craft. Portions of this program will take place outside so be sure to dress for the weather.
