My family and I had the opportunity to take a tour of the Jiffy Mix Plant on a day that my kids did not have school. I had called earlier in the week to reserve a spot for us on the tour. There were four of us that went on the tour, myself, my husband, my eight-year-old daughter, and nine-year-old son. We were all excited to see the Jiffy Mix Plant! And, the best part is that the tour is free!
The plant is located in Chelsea, MI, which is about 1 1/2 hours from Kalamazoo. We stopped on our way out of town for the weekend, but it is close enough to make a day trip out of it if that works for your family.
When we arrived at the factory, we were able to park right across the street. Nice and convenient! After a short walk from the parking lot we entered the building and was greeted by our tour host. Since it wasn’t quite time for the tour to start we were able to read about the history of the Chelsea Milling Company and the Jiffy Mix Plant. Chelsea Milling Company started four generations ago and has been kept in the family all of these years. They have been giving tours since about 1962.
Once all of the people in our tour group had arrived we were taken into a room to begin the video portion of the tour. We were all offered something to drink before we got started, water for the kids and coffee, tea, or water for the adults. After about a 20-minute video giving some history about the company and explaining what they do we watched a short safety video. Both videos feature Corny, an animated Corn Muffin box, which adds a little fun to the videos. Here are a couple of fun facts that we learned: Jiffy has 92% of the market of corn muffin mixes, and all Jiffy mixes are made in Chelsea since it is their only plant.
At this point, we were able to purchase Jiffy mixes and other Jiffy merchandise such as hats and t-shirts. The mixes can be bought in a box of 12 or 24 and you can customize your boxes to get the Jiffy mixes that you family would most enjoy. My family bought a box of 12 mixes and we were told that it would be waiting for us at the and of the tour, which I appreciated because then no one had to carry the box around throughout the rest of the tour. Next, we were all given hair nets to put on, and my husband even had to wear a beard net to cover his facial hair. Now that we all had our stylish hair nets on, we were ready for the walking part of the tour!
We were able to walk through the part of the plant where they were taking the boxes and putting the paper liners in them to get them ready to fill with the mix. When we were there they were packaging Corn Muffin Mixes. We were also able to see the equipment used to package large bulk quantities of their mixes, although it was not running at the time. Then, we saw the finished small box mixes on their way to be boxed up in larger quantities to be shipped.
Goodies & Gift Bags For The Kids
At the conclusion of the tour, we were all given bags with goodies in it. The bags for the kids had a Raspberry Muffin Mix, an activity book, a sticker and a recipe book. The bags for the adults had a Raspberry Muffin Mix, a Vegetarian Corn Muffin Mix, a recipe book and a sticker. And, as promised, our box of purchased Jiffy Mixes was waiting for us at the end of our tour.
The tour lasted for about an hour. We had a great time!
