The Kalamazoo Promise will be celebrating 10 years in 2015! Beginning in the Fall of 2015, students will be able to use the program to attend one of 58 schools throughout Michigan. Talk about an amazing gift to our community! As of 2015, 3800 students have utilized the program. In another 10 years my rising 2nd grader will be gearing up to use his Promise scholarship.

You’re invited to a community celebration on August 15 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm in Bronson Park in Downtown Kalamazoo. This is a FREE event and will include free food and beverages, entertainment, children’s fun zone, and more! See details on the flyer below.

Only Scholarship Of Its Kind

The Kalamazoo Promise is the ONLY scholarship of its kind and focuses on the following principles:

  • Work hard in school.
  • Graduate.
  • Earn a Promise scholarship.
  • Be successful in life.

The program is offered to Kalamazoo Public School graduates because:

  • Education is an important key to financial well-being.
  • It allows KPS to differentiate itself from other public and private school systems.
  • It provides a real meaningful and tangible opportunity for all students.

What Does The Scholarship Provide

The scholarship provides up to four years of tuition and mandatory fees for post-secondary programs. All students who graduate from KPS, are residing in the district and have been students for at least four consecutive years are eligible. Scholarship amounts range from 65%-100%. There are a few more eligibility requirements regarding GPA and such. It is absolutely mind-blowing that this program is set to go on in perpetuity…..That means forever!

This program truly encourages a college going culture among local elementary, middle and high schools. It means so much to students and parents!!!! Thank you so very much to the donors for enhancing, encouraging and energizing education in our community!

Notable Feedback From KPS Families

[quote] The Promise includes everyone, regardless of need. There are a few hoops to jump through, it is not dependent on an ‘excellent essay’, or only applicable to the top 10% or bottom 10%. By making it available to everyone who graduates out of a KPS high school, the creators of The Promise have influenced not only the students on KPS, the parents of those students, and the community as a whole. The Promise says EVERYONE can go to college. In Kalamazoo we believe in the promise of each and every student. It is unlike anything of its kind. The Promise is generous, forward thinking, and life changing. It makes me proud to live in Kalamazoo.

[quote] We feel the benefits go beyond just the tuition being provided for KPS graduates. We believe in the Kalamazoo Public Schools and the strides they have made in developing a ‘college going’ culture beginning at the elementary school level. The excitement of these kids at the prospect of attending college, the improvements of the KPS curriculum and staff, as well as the recognition the Promise has generated for Kalamazoo are all incredible assets the Promise has brought to the Kalamazoo community. The desire of private colleges, such as Kalamazoo College, to become part of the Program has shown that the benefits extend to the colleges and universities as well.

Parents of a rising 3rd grader

Kalamazoo residents know the best kept open secret in Michigan and possibly the country. The Kalamazoo Promise is the only fully funded, in perpetuity, non-means tested free college plan in the United States. Having worked full-time while putting myself through college, I remember one of the trade-offs was the depth of my intellectual development competed with the time to pay for it. The Kalamazoo Promise offers our children the maximum opportunity to return college to what it was meant to be, a place to learn to think.
