Spring Fun Without Leaving Home

Get out those sunglasses, and bust out the short-sleeve t-shirts, Spring Break is around the corner.

If your family is planning to stay local for Spring Break the first week in April, don’t fret. There are some great opportunities in Kalamazoo for fun and exciting ways to keep your children busy all while having a blast.

We’ve compiled a list of spring camps ranging from full day to half days, that cover a variety of interests sure to guarantee an awesome time. We also found a number of unique options for spring classes if you’re looking for a short and sweet experience for your kids.

Spring break camp is offered in full and half-day options. Students will be introduced to art on view in the galleries to inspire imagination and creativity, before working to create their own works of art in the studio.

Apple Tree and Gilden Woods

School-agers (kindergarten through age 12), can join Spring Explorers at AppleTree or Gilden Woods. Enjoy a week of field trips, friendships, games, crafts, and music

This year’s camps revolve around the popular 70’s cartoon Schoolhouse Rock that teaches lessons with clever and catchy tunes. Kids will learn acting, singing, and dancing in these fun-filled camps. There are two camps offered based on grade (K-3rd and 4th-9th). Camps will perform in the Civic Auditorium on the last day. Early drop off and late pick-up available.

The Kalamazoo Nature Center offers a Spring Break Camp for children in Pre-K through 5th grade. Registration is available for individual days or the entire week. Each day has a different theme and may include crafts, meeting animal ambassadors, a naturalist-led hike, and choice time.

Science and STEM-related fun await at the Air Zoo’s “Hands-on” Spring Break Day Camps for children Pre-K through 5th grade. Preschool topics include Fantastic Flying, Astronauts in Training, and Build It. Topics for Kindergarten through 5th graders include Rockets and Roller Coasters, Rescue 911, and Cool Chemical Connections.

Preschoolers can bring an adult free of charge for twice the fun. Extended day is available, and lunch can be purchased at the Kitty Hawk Cafe for full-day campers.

Spring Break Blast Off Camp is a full day style camp complete with sports, games, park visits and field trips.

The YMCA, Maple Branch location, offers camps during school breaks for school-age children in grades K- 5. Activities include group games, arts and crafts, outdoor play, quiet reading, and swimming.

Half and full-day basketball camps available for ages 8-14, co-ed. In the morning campers will work on shooting and ball handling.  In the afternoon campers will develop team concepts through basketball games along with individual and group competitions. Skills will be taught in a competitive and fun environment.

Kids classes are generally offered once a month and include cake, candy, cookies or cupcakes, specifically designed for younger chefs. Each month offers a different project for kids to work on icings and various decorating techniques.

Come to Family Fun Day where kids and families will learn the basics of preparing glass for the fusing (melting) process onto a tile or suncatcher. You can drop-in or preregister, check their schedule for exact dates. No experience necessary, children under 13 must have an adult present.

Every Tuesday is Kids Day Out day at the Kalamazoo Candle Company Marketplace. Stop in from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM or 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM and let kids make their own unique candle. Kids can mix and match their favorite scents, and even design their label.

On Wednesday, April 3 and Thursday, April 4 from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM, 4th Wall Theatre is bringing two programs and performances to the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. Kids work on singing, dancing, and acting, as they work to create a seven-minute play. Each child’s skills and strengths will be respected and creatively included in the experience. Registration is required.
