As spring in Kalamazoo brings regular rain showers, we offer up a list of great area parks that remain relatively mess-free. All of these parks feature portions of rubber turf play areas, paved paths, and won’t require trekking though soggy, muddy areas.
Between Piccadilly Rd and Stafford Rd, Kalamazoo, MI 49006
A lovely neighborhood park that features rubber turf surface underneath the main play structure. The play structure is a great fit for older kids as there is a lot of room to climb. There are also a couple of baby swings and big kid swings with wood chip surface underneath. To access the park you will want to park on one of the road adjacent to the play space and then walk a short paved path to the play area.
Lake St and Walters St, Kalamazoo, MI 49048
Upjohn Park features a portions of rubber turf surface, mixed with wood chip areas. This is a large playground with a lot of options for children both large and small. The park also features a small skate park. Upjohn park has been known to flood when the Portage creek is flooded, so it is best avoided when area waters are running high.
3664 S. Ninth St, Kalamazoo, MI 49009
The brand new playground at Flesher Field features a mix of rubber turf play spaces and wood chip areas. The tot area is geared towards small children and is completely rubber turf. The big kid areas of the playground are wood chip covered as well as the swing set area. There are paved paths that run around the entire park, perfect for a scooter or bike ride. Covered pavilions at the playground are a great way to wait out a brief summer shower.
8600 S. Sprinkle Road, Portage, MI 49002
Head towards the back of the park near Long Lake for a beautiful and very fun rubber turfed play space. This is a spacious playground with activities for children both large and small. There are small portions of wood chipped areas, specifically underneath the swing sets. This park has a seasonal admission of $5 per car for Portage residents and $10 for non-residents. Seasonal passes are also available for purchase.

Featuring a rubber turf play area, this park is ideal for older children. Small kids can explore, but the equipment is best suited to efficient climbers.
Texas Corners Farmers Market Playspace
7110 W Q Ave, Kalamazoo, MI 49009
A great little park that is very busy on days when the Farmers Market is open, the play space is open to the public anytime and features wood chips base directly next to the parking lot for easy access.
Arcadia Creek Festival Place
Water St and Edwards St, Kalamazoo, MI 49007
You have probably seen this play space if you have attended any festivals downtown. The play surface is all rubber turf. This play space is especially great for older kids. Bring a bike or scooter to make use of the paved areas in the festival place.
