Summer is winding down and thoughts are turning to the school year. There’s plenty of time to squeeze in one last hurrah of summer. We’ve been on the road this summer and have a number of great “do-able day trips” from Kalamazoo plus we have some great ideas for a little longer overnight trips.

Here’s a summary of our Michigan Road-Trip series which includes five of our favorite Michigan towns in the summer. Make sure you click on each of links to see our full review on what to discover, where to dine, and where to play. Have fun!

Michigan Road Trips

1. Ludington

Ludington has a little of of everything-great beaches, miles of hiking trails, awesome kids’ museum and tons of seasonal family friendly events. Plus, shopping and a chance to grab some super yummy ice cream. You’ll love the low-key feel of this family friendly northern Michigan town.

2. South Haven

South Haven is more than just a beautiful Michigan beach town. It’s where families from both near and far (lots of families from Chicago) can come to relax and get away. We love heading to the beach for the day or sitting by the harbor and people watching. Plus, check out the pirate chaser cruise or just enjoy a great playground near the beach.

3. Saugatuck

From the strolling the cute shops to the beautiful beaches to grabbing a bite at one of their many restaurants, there’s plenty for the whole family to do and see in Saugatuck. We also love some of the special attractions that are offered in Saugatuck that will make you feel like you’re truly on vacation!

4. Manistee

Manistee is approximately 2 and 3/4 hours from Kalamazoo. It is an adorable little town just North of Ludington. This town is so picturesque that you’ll want to come back to visit again. You will find a number of beaches, hiking trails and opportunities to participate in a variety of water sports.

5. St. Joseph

St. Joseph is one of our family favorites for a quick day trip from Kalamazoo. Why do we love St. Joseph so much? The beautiful beaches, great shopping options, a huge interactive splash fountain, fun kids museums, and more make this a great family day trip destination.

Overnight Road Trips

6. Road Trips 2-5 Hours From Kalamazoo

Plus, we have more ideas! In the Spring, we published a listing of super fun getaways that would also be perfect for this time of year.  Chicago, Milwaukee, Indianpolis, and Dearborn & Ann Arbor all offer great options and are all trips that we’ve done ourselves. So these are parent-tested and kid approved!

Hope you have a great trip wherever your end of summer hurrah leads you!
