Kids and Families Can Play at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts

Exploring, enjoying, and creating art with your kids is a way to make memories and encourage creative expression and learning. Your visit to the KIA starts when the whole family looks up to marvel at the Dale Chihuly glass chandelier, Kalamazoo Ruby Light, in our entryway.

Indoor Activities for Kids

Children through age 12 are always free, and love exploring our galleries with a question or two. Can you find any animals, or boats, or flowers in the paintings? Can you find something funny, or ugly? Our monthly free Art Detectives program (2nd Saturdays, for kids 4-8) is a great way for parents – or grandparents – to introduce children to the art museum. On the lower level is our “please touch” interactive gallery, filled with stations to play and make art.

More to Know:

  • Art Detectives is for kids ages 4-8 (with an adult) to hear a story, explore the galleries, and make an art project monthly on second Saturdays, September through May, from 10:30 AM-12:00 PM.
  • Teen Night features pizza, pop, and art-making monthly on second Fridays, October through May, from 6:00-8:00 PM.
  • Downtown Kalamazoo’s 1st Friday Art Hop, makes a great family night out, with free admission 5:00-8:00 PM, art-making, refreshments, and new art each month.
  • Kids and grownups can take their creativity further with an art class in clay, drawing, photography (and many more), or a spring break or summer camp. Classes start in January, April, June, and September.
