Happy January! I hope everyone had a great Winter Break and are now enjoying getting back into the swing of things. While this time of year is typically a little more quiet than the whirlwind of the holidays, we do have some ideas for weekend fun.

For this weekend, consider…

See individual listings for times, pricing, and venue information.

Art Hop | January 8 from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm | Various locations in Kalamazoo

  • An evening of art exhibits and events. It’s fun, interactive and a great way to explore Kalamazoo that you can do alone or with friends and family. And you don’t have to be an “artist” to enjoy it. Free. Click here for the January brochure.

Art Detectives | January 9 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm | Kalamazoo Institute of Arts in Kalamazoo

  • Explore creativity with kids–where the ideas we all have come from. They start with a story in the library, then go visit the KIA’s art galleries to talk about how artists go their ideas. Then go in the Kirk Newman Art School to practice being creative.
  • Free for children and their adults–and free parking for Art Detectives attenders. Just tell the guards at the parking lot you’re here for Art Detectives.

The Great Freeze! | January 9 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 | Kalamazoo Valley Museum in Kalamazoo

  • The Great Freeze will include a variety of snow and cold-weather crafts for all ages, from snowmen, snow globes, and a snow gauge to sweater-themed crafts and winter journals. Enjoy a self-guided scavenger hunt through the galleries in search of sleds, snowshoes, and other artifacts used in Michigan winters past.  Free.

Michigan Mammal Adaptations | January 10 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm | Kalamazoo Nature Center in Kalamazoo

  • Learn about common Michigan Mammals by comparing fur, teeth, skulls and scat. Dress for the weather — we will venture outdoors to look for signs of mammals around us. Normal admission fees apply. Free to members of the KNC.

Sunday Radio Day Discount Movies | January 10 with movies at 4:30 pm and 6:50 pm | Celebration Cinema in Portage

  • Enjoy a movie night with a discount. Z96.5, WKZO and FM106.5 Sunday Night Movie – just $5 per ticket. Alvin and the Chipmunks The Road Chip is the selected movie this Sunday.

Go Ice Skating! This week we just published our 2016 Ice Skating Guide with plenty of options around town to hit the ice.
