Welcome to the weekend! I love all of the fun stuff happening this weekend around Kalamazoo. Don’t let the cooler weather keep you indoors. There are plenty of great family friendly events that you won’t want to miss.


Some fun highlights for this weekend include:

  • Healthy Kids Day on May 14 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm at Woods Lake Elementary Field. Join the fun with outdoor fitness, games and activities. FREE. The first 100 kids receive a free t-shirt!

Astronomy Day

  • Astronomy Day 2016 on May 14 from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Portage District Library. Activities include: solar observing, educational and informative displays, hands-on activities for children, Ask the Astronomer booth, and special presentations on galaxies and more. FREE.

  • Join the Young Artists of Kalamazoo County at the KIA on May 14 from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. Free admission to the KIA to enjoy great art, music, and other fun activities for the family! Check out selected artists from schools in Kalamazoo County.

bike safety adventure

  • Bicycle Safety Adventure at Haverhill Park from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Kids 6 – 12 years of age are invited to participate in this FREE event. (Children must be accompanied by an adult). FREE helmet to the first 100 child participants. Activities include: meet & greet costumed characters, bicycles inspections, learn the rules of the road, tour of emergency vehicles, and more.Outdoors if the weather cooperates, otherwise the fun will be taken inside to Haverhill Elementary School.

  • Want a fun hike? Join the SWMLC Storybook Hike on May 15 from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the Chipman Preserve in Comstock Township. A fun, unique way for kids to experience literature and Chipman Preserve’s spectacular lupines! FREE. The first 12 families to RSVP and attend the hike will receive a free copy of “Miss Rumphius” provided by Bookbug. After the guided hike, the preserve will remain open and the storybook will remain posted for anyone who would like to participate in a self-guided hike.

Tulip Time

  • Want to get out of town? Check out the Tulip Time Festival. This is the last weekend to join the fun. Make sure you check out their full schedule of events for Saturday.
  • Put on your tennis shoes, grab the kids, and head out to one of these Fun Runs or Fundraising Walks this weekend.  These are great family events!

  • Kid’s ROAR at the Sherman Lake YMCA on May 15 from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm. Join the 4th Annual Kids Roar – A Rogue Obstacle Adventure Race for Youth Ages 8-14. There will be plenty of Dirt, Mud, Paint & Water! Refreshments and camp tours will be available after the race. Same day registration is available for $20.
