Let’s face it: kids aren’t generally thrilled to visit most dental offices.
Thankfully, Portage Pediatric Dentistry is not like most dental offices, and Dr. Jody Wrathall is not like most dentists.
With a welcoming, family-friendly space and a compassionate, pediatric-focused dentist, your kids may be requesting their dental checkups just to visit.
Portage Pediatric Dentistry treats infants, children, teens and children with special health care needs in a state-of-the-art dental facility.
They take great pride in creating a fun environment for children that may have more anxiety about visiting the dentist.

Meet the Dentist
Dr.Jody Wrathall
Dr. Wrathall’s ties to the community run deep, as she grew up in Portage and graduated from Portage Central High School before attending Western Michigan University for her bachelor’s degree.
She became the owner of Portage Pediatric Dentistry in 2016 after Dr. Deppen retired.
Jody’s husband Doug is a Spanish teacher in Mattawan and they have three children.
Education & Credentials
Dr. Jody received her dental degree (D.D.S.) in 2010 and master’s degree (M.S.) in pediatric dentistry in 2012, both from the University of Michigan.
She achieved her Board Certification from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry in 2013.
Kids Love the Special Care at Portage Pediatric Dentistry
Portage Pediatric Dentistry is dedicated to making all patients feel comfortable, whether your child is one who can’t wait to sit in the dental chair or one who needs some additional time and attention.
Parents can rest assured that their kids are in capable hands.
Portage Pediatric Dentistry offers handouts and suggestions online for how to make a visit more comfortable.
They utilize sensory baskets, sunglasses and blankets to help kids feel more at ease. The staff receives regular training on special needs.
Find Kindness in Their Approach
Kindness, not fear, reigns supreme at the office.
Each appointment is tailored to the individual child, where they will receive the care, compassion, and understanding they deserve. This will help them, and you, know exactly what’s going on at all times.
Children are encouraged to look at their own x-rays and be in charge of their own health.
“My goal is that every child and parent receive not only exceptional dental treatment, but also feel like a part of our dental family. We are dedicated to tailoring your child’s appointment to their individual needs so they leave feeling cared for, understood and excited to come back. Yes, going to the dentist can be fun!” Dr. Jody says.
The Solea Laser Helps with Fillings & Frenectomy Comfort
One of the most helpful tools at Portage Pediatric Dentistry is the Solea laser. This laser helps make fillings a breeze- no drill and no needles!
Dr. Jody also performs frenectomies in-office using Solea, to treat both tongue ties and lip ties.
Community Advocates
Dr. Jody takes pride in educating children on the importance of preventative care for healthy teeth and talks to youth at area schools.
The office works with other local dentists to adopt methods for dental care that are less invasive for the patient.
Normally, the Tooth Fairy helps lead the charge on special events and visiting preschools. But due to COVID-19, these programs are on pause.
Instead, Portage Pediatric Dentistry helped the Kalamazoo community by donating some supplies for the local hospitals.
