Why The Montessori School
Dr. Maria Montessori, the Italian physician who developed the Montessori method, said of education, “let us leave the life free to develop within the limits of the good, and let us observe this inner life developing. This is the whole of our mission.” The values of freedom and independence, holistic development, and compassion outlined by this statement are the heart of the Montessori educational model.
As parents, we want our children to be kind, well-rounded, and able to do anything they put their minds to. We want them to explore every opportunity and learn to make quality, independent decisions. These goals align perfectly with the child-lead, hands-on curriculum at The Montessori School (TMS).
With campus locations in both Kalamazoo and Richland, TMS’s mission is to provide a high-quality, comprehensive education that fosters a child’s love of learning and addresses the whole child academically, emotionally, and socially.
TMS has been a part of Southwest Michigan and the Kalamazoo community since 1972 and has earned a reputation for helping all children reach their fullest potential at their own unique pace.
Meeting the Needs of Your Family
Full-day programs are available to all students enrolled at TMS. Both the Kalamazoo and Richland campuses are open from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM during the regular school year. Half-day and full-day summer programming at our Kalamazoo campus are also available to all students.
Children ages 3 to 12 will be able to take advantage of a variety of programs, including bilingual preschool and kindergarten, nature-based learning and internships with local businesses for our oldest students.
Throughout the day, highly trained and credentialed teachers and support staff provide an authentic Montessori education, rooted in the teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori. Children receive individualized lessons that emphasize independence, freedom within limits, and respect for the child and the environment.
NEW All-Year Montessori Option
Beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, TMS now offers an All-Year Montessori (AYM) classroom at their Kalamazoo campus.
The AYM classroom is designed for students who participate in the preschool or kindergarten programs as well as the summer program and all-day care. By grouping these students into a single classroom, transitions and interruptions throughout the day will be eliminated. Children will arrive and depart at similar times and stay with the same peers and staff for a full 12 months, creating a focused and cohesive environment for learning and bonding.
