Why The Montessori School
The Montessori method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in 1906, is built around the values of freedom and independence, holistic development, and compassion.
The child-centered, hands-on curriculum at The Montessori School (TMS) encourages exploration and problem-solving. The curriculum includes lessons in grace and courtesy to cultivate kind individuals and a peaceful classroom community.
Located near downtown Kalamazoo, on a newly expanded campus, TMS has been providing an authentic, high-quality, and comprehensive Montessori education to our community since 1972. Their mission is to foster children’s’ love of learning and address the whole child academically, emotionally, and socially.
Children ages 3 to 12 will be able to take advantage of a variety of programs, including year-round preschool and kindergarten, nature-based learning, and, for older students, themed elementary summer camps and internships with local businesses.
Meeting the Needs of Your Family
Full-day programs are available to all students enrolled at TMS. Both the primary and elementary programs are open from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM during the regular school year.
A half-day program is also offered for preschool families. Half-day or full-day summer programming is available to preschool- and kindergarten-age students.
Throughout the day, highly trained and credentialed teachers and support staff provide an authentic Montessori education. Children receive individualized, developmentally appropriate lessons that emphasize independence, freedom within limits, and respect for the child and the environment.
Consider the All-Year Montessori Option
TMS offers a unique All-Year Montessori (AYM) classroom, providing consistent, quality, Montessori education to families who need full-time care.
The AYM classroom is designed for students who participate in the preschool or kindergarten programs as well as the summer program and all-day care. By grouping these students into a single classroom, transitions and interruptions throughout the day are eliminated.
Children will arrive and depart at similar times and stay with the same peers and staff for a full 12 months for up to three years, creating a more focused and cohesive environment for learning and bonding.
