Gymnastics for Kids FAQs
Is your child ready to cartwheel and somersault? We’ve got answers to the most frequently asked questions from families about this sport:
FAQs
What Age do Gymnastics Classes Start?
Classes can start early with infants, in parent and child-style classes. These courses can include babies as young as four months old.
By preschool age, kids can attend classes solo, but don’t expect advanced techniques: their classes instead focus on balance and gross motor skills.
Once kids are five or older, they will begin training on specific skills, including cartwheels, handstands and beam work.
Can My Child Participate Without Travel Competitions?
Yes. Many centers offer classes without the requirement of team competition or travel.
How Much Does it Cost to Participate in Gymnastics?
For a young, recreational gymnast, classes average $15 to $20 per class.
Competitive costs average $150 or more per month for classes, depending upon age and number of hours spent training. This does not include equipment or travel expenses.
Some gyms also offer drop-in classes; those average $10 per session.
What Equipment is Needed for Gymnastics?
Gymnasts typically need tight-fitting clothes, as they will be moving a lot and frequently upside down.
For girls, most centers recommend a leotard and compression shorts. For boys, a compression shirt or tee shirt and shorts are all that is needed when starting classes.
More experienced gymnasts will need additional equipment such as grips to help with bars and rings. Travel gymnasts will also need to purchase competition attire.
What is Acro?
Acrobatic dance, frequently referred to simply as acro, combines classical technique with fluid, acrobatic movements.
Those looking for an athletic, tumbling experience should likely choose gymnastics instead; acro’s primary focus is dance.
Can My Child Be a Cheerleader Outside of Their School?
Yes. Local organizations and gyms offer cheerleading teams, classes or clinics in cheer, starting with elementary school-aged kids.
These can include skills practice or competitive cheer teams.
