Not only does the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts showcase amazing exhibits, they also offer art classes. Classes begin at age three and go all the way through high school. Younger kids will enjoy learning art basics in an introductory, My First Art Class program (ages 3-4). Older kids can choose from a variety of classes on topics including drawing, clay, painting, photography and mixed media.

Design Street is a non-profit Community Arts Education Center located in the former Plainwell fire station. Design Street offers many different opportunities for students of all ages who love art and want to grow their talents. Programs include: daytime and evening art class options for adults and teens, “After School Art” for ages 5-10, an “Early Arts” program for ages 3-9, and several program options designed for Home School students ages 5-18. WMU Saturday Morning Art (SMArt)

Designed for young people age 7 to 14 who enjoy art and wish to develop their talents, SMArt classes will explore a wide range of creative approaches, mediums, and techniques.

Seven weeks of art instruction culminate in a public exhibition of student art work in the Frostic School of Art galleries.

Classes meet in the Frostic School of Art studios in South Kohrman Hall on the main campus. The registration fee for seven weeks of classes is $45. Registration is non-refundable.

Glass Art Kalamazoo is a community-based nonprofit organization founded on the mission to enrich our community by providing exceptional experiences in Glass Art and a premiere studio space for local artists. Classes are offered for Children 10 and older. Glass Art has three separate studios: Classes are offered in three separate studios for children 10 and older. Traditional Glass Blowing is taught in the Hot Shop, where molten glass is gathered on steel rods from a central furnace and then shaped with steel and wooden tools. In the Lampworking studio, students are taught the process of heating and shaping soft moretti or borosilicate glass with a small torch to create beads, pendants, and small works of art. The Kiln Fusing studio involves the process of cutting, arranging, and layering thin sheets of cold glass into different patterns and shapes which are then melted in a kiln to form one plate or piece of glass art.

The Art Center of Battle Creek has 3 galleries for exhibits, 4 working studios that are home to approximately 50 classes each semester and a gift gallery featuring over 150 Michigan artists. Mid-January the Art Center offers the following Saturday classes:

  • Pencil Sketching for students ages 6 and older to learn the basics of drawing in an upbeat classroom setting.
  • Beginning Ceramics for Kids – students ages 6-10 will explore the basic principles of working with clay.

Offered in over 20 schools in the area; Young Rembrandts is an after-school program (meeting once a week) with a focus on elementary drawing and cartooning. Home Depot offers a monthly Kids Workshop, (generally the first Saturday of the month) from 9:00 am to noon. All workshops are FREE for children age 5 to 12.
