Does My City Set Trick-or-Treat Times?
I fully admit that dressing my kids up is one of my favorite Halloween activities. There are few things cuter than footie pajamas with little pumpkins on their feet.
And as they have grown older, I am ALL IN for costumes and house decorations.
However, once they are all dressed and ready to go, how do you know when to head out for candy?
Is five o’clock too early to start? Is eight o’clock too late to ring doorbells?

Trick-or-Treating Tips
Trick-or-treating in Southwest Michigan requires a bit of planning- largely thanks to Mother Nature.
Here are a handful of tips to help maximize your Halloween fun and safety.
1 – Dress for Michigan Weather
Every Michigander knows that the weather forecast for Halloween is always a gamble.
Since we have seen anywhere from 30 to 60 degrees during trick-or-treat times, be ready to adjust costumes to accommodate: this may mean umbrellas, hats and mittens, or puffy coats.
2 – Choose Comfy Footwear
In addition to the weather, dress for walking. While those little heels may look amazing on Cinderella, leave them at home and opt for comfy walking shoes (or boots) instead, or the princess will be spent after a few houses.
3 – Shine Some Light on Trick-or-Treaters
Glow sticks and flashlights are a good idea for all ages- especially older kids who may not have an adult present.
4 – Have Older Kids Check In
If tweens and teens are heading out without adults, have set times to check in with parents and bring a phone if possible.
5 – Discuss Trick-or-Treating Safety
Yes, kids should know these, but it’s always a good idea to have a safety refresher before trick-or-treating:
• Stay in groups
• Watch for cars; use crosswalks when available
• Only visit houses with lights on
• Never enter a stranger’s home
• Wait to eat any candy until returning home (and parents can approve)
